These cloth bags are made by members of Acoma (Atelier de la communauté Mandjak), a Senegalese cooperative in Dakar.
Traditionally, weaving is a male domain in West Africa. This is the case also among the Manjak, who live in the border area of Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. The strong geometrical patterns of these bags and purses reflect the loincloth and shroud weaving traditions of the Manjak people.
