Ethiopian orthodox icons

Our hand painted and hand carved icons are authentic pieces of church art from Ethiopia - the second oldest continuous Christian State in the world. These kinds of pocket icons are common among the Ethiopian Orthodox.

The painted scenes on the inside of the door and the centre panel are derived from Biblical history and the life of the personalities of Ethiopia’s own pantheon of saints. The paintings are a true expression of piety. There is a down-to-earth grace and beauty in the simplicity of this style with its ubiquitous warm colours, and skilled composition.

Both the painting and the carving imitate the Aksum style of the 17th and 18th centuries. The wood is local zegwa, wera or wawa. The doors are hinged in the traditional manner with cotton string.
