Our vetiver cushions come from Mali.

Our ecological cushions, designed by the young Malian talent Aïda Duplessis, are produced in her workshop in Bamako. The principal material is cotton. What makes the cushions special is the layer of fibres from the roots of the vetiver grass. In addition to giving the cushions a rough, trendy feel, the vetiver has a pleasant, natural scent.

Vetiver – the wonder plant

Vetiver is the world’s leading utility plant. The vetiveria family comprise over ten different grass species in Africa, Asia and Australia. The tall grass of vetiveria zizanoides and has roots which form a winding network going as deep as 3 m. From the odorous roots, a precious essential oil is distilled, which is used in a variety of applications from perfumery to ethno-pharmacology (traditionally used against burns, insect bites and malaria). The scent has been used as an insect repellent and has a soothing effect.

The same roots give the plant particular characteristics that make it an ecological tool as an inexpensive, natural barrier against soil erosion. The grass is non-invasive, yet tough and it will survive drought and fires.
